While visiting a small Asian village one day, French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau once spotted a tiny statuette for sale. When the dealer asked 150 rupees for it, Clemenceau offered only 50.
“Impossible!” the dealer cried indignantly. “I’d rather give it to you than sell it for fifty rupees.” “Fine,” replied Clemenceau, pocketing the trinket. “It is very kind of you,” he added, “but such a gift can only be given by one friend to another.
So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to give you a gift in return. You won’t object?” “Of course not,” came the reply. “Very well,” replied Clemenceau, “here are 50 rupees for you to use for charity or in any other way you choose.” The dealer took them and Clemenceau departed with a cordial smile.
